Southwest Austin is perfect for people who want to be close to the city's center yet prefer the lower prices and greater accessibility of South Austin. Southwest Austin is home to some of Austin's finest shopping and recreation destinations, including Barton Creek Mall, Southpark Meadows, and the Ladybird Johnson Wildflower Center. Southwest Austin has numerous neighborhoods with many housing values to accommodate many buyers. The area is home to younger communities like Circle C and more established ones like Oak Hill, Austin's largest and most sought-after enclave. Southwest Austin is perfect if you want to be close to the city but also have access to peaceful, secure communities.
Families favor Southwest Austin due to its peaceful residential areas, secure communities, convenient locations, and excellent educational opportunities. Large, wooded lots with intimate encounters with local wildlife remain available in some areas. The Austin Zoo is a hidden gem that few people know about. It's not the San Diego Zoo, but it has plenty of attractions to keep our kids occupied—including 300 animals from 100 different species. What was once a goat ranch has expanded into a sanctuary for various creatures, from monkeys to cats, domestic pets, and native Texas wildlife. The tigers, lions, monkeys, and Lemurs are our children's favorites. As more money is donated, the Austin Zoo hopes to expand from 15 acres to 40. The zoo receives almost 235,000 visitors per year. There's a train to travel around the grounds and a petting zoo where the kids may feed and pet the animals.
Southwest Austin is home to Hamilton Pool Nature Walk, which leads to a natural pool formed thousands of years ago when the dome of an underground river collapsed due to erosion, about 23 miles to the west of Austin, off Highway 71. The Hamilton Pool Reserve has been famous for Austin locals and tourists since the 1960s. The beauty of the pool area is well worth the short walk from the parking lot. It's a mini-wonder in our eyes. There is a 50-foot waterfall into a jade-green lake at this 232-acre nature sanctuary.
There is a public botanical garden 10 miles southwest of downtown Austin called the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center. Almost a hundred thousand people visit it annually. With art displays, outdoor sculptures, and hiking trails, visitors can observe more than 700 native Central Texas species. The center is a department at UT Austin that focuses on studying and teaching about the local flora.
